I don't know about you, but for me the holidays are stressful enough WITHOUT having to worry about the cost of traveling. Since we travel to Washington multiple times a year to visit my family, I have learned some secrets to traveling cheap during the holidays!
Don't worry friends. A frugal fanatic gladly accepts this challenge.
This is where champions are made.
Since my family doesn't live close, I've had to specialize in saving money on travel!
Here are my secrets to traveling the cheapest way possible!
I really like nice, clean hotels, but I really DON'T like paying a lot of money for a hotel. So yes, that makes life a bit hard.
What's the fix?
Use a travel site like Booking.com that specializes in finding deals on hotels and bundles (hotel, rental car, flight, etc).
Another option is to use Sam's Club travel and entertainment membership perks!
They offer sweet discounts on hotels, rental cars, and ALL SORTS of entertainment including tickets to major theme and water parks, shows, etc.
I used this website to book all the hotels for our honeymoon, and have to say I was very impressed with their customer service.
We had planned on staying at a hotel in downtown Seattle the second night of our honeymoon, but we ended up having a frustrating experience with parking and driving with a truck and trailer and decided that it wasn't worth it, so we opted to stay in a nearby city and cancel our hotel.
I thought there was no way we would get refunded for our stay.
However, when I called the customer service rep was extremely polite and IMMEDIATELY refunded us for the hotel stay. As in, within minutes , the refund was in our checking account.
After my personal experience, I would recommend booking.com to EVERYONE. It's a hassle-free, NO BS way to save money on travel during the holidays. I call that win-win.
The website provides a ton of information about all the hotels in the area you will be staying, including:
If we are traveling and need a place to stay as well, I always check booking.com!
I'm about to rock your world.
Actually using the free breakfast at the hotel you stay at will save you money.
When we travel we always take advantage of the free breakfast, it can save you anywhere from $10-$40 per day depending on where you like to eat breakfast.
If you shop for hotels on booking.com , it will tell you right on the search results if the hotel you are looking at offers free breakfast.
Or, if you're a Sam's Club member, they offer up to 60% off normal prices for members if you book through Sam's Club!
The 11th commandment is thou shalt not travel without a budget.
A budget gives you permission to spend guilt-free.

I have found that flying out and returning on Tuesday and Wednesdays is the cheapest.
I have never paid over $250 for a round trip plane ticket, and that is because I choose what days I/we are going to travel wisely. In order to do this, you're going to need to be flexible with your dates.
If you can't be flexible, then you need to plan well in advance in order to get the best price on flights.
We have traveled on weekends before and still got a good deal, but I had to be patient and watch dates daily. I use google flight tracker to do this. When the prices of the flight that you are "watching" drops, you will get an email from Google!
Consider flying on a holiday.
This year, we are going to visit my family in Washington over Thanksgiving. We decided to fly out on Thanksgiving Day and we will be in Washington just short of a week. No, I'm not crazy. I was able to get two nonstop plane tickets for $200 a piece.
DURING THE HOLIDAYS.
In case you're wondering.... THAT IS UNHEARD OF.
I am willing to fly out Thanksgiving Day if it means that I will save $600.
Call me crazy... I call you broke :)
Try your best (if flying) to pack light so you don't have to check a bag.
Here are some things you can do to avoid checking a bag:
I ALWAYS push the limits with my carry-on, and they have never told me I had to check a bag because the one I brought was too big. I stuff as many things as I can in every single inch of my carry on.
In case you ignore the obvious, snacks and meals are a hell of a lot more expensive if you buy them in the airport.
If you have a layover at a bigger airport, then the chain fast food places are about the same price.
However, if you eat at a place that is not a chain, then you will pay an arm and a leg. If you have drinks, it's even worse! It can be anywhere from double to triple the normal cost.
Don't spend all your money before you even get to your destination!

Always check Groupon for discounts at restaurants, family activities, gifts, etc. This site literally has something for EVERYONE. I use it most often for deals on dining out because they have so many options.
If you will be eating out during the holidays (whether you are traveling or not), check Groupon for local offers!
You can almost always find a Groupon deal for travel!
BYOB to holiday gatherings, or if you're hosting, be sure to include BYOB on the invitation.
For those of you who don't know what BYOB means, ask your kids. Kidding. Kind of.
Don't go out for expensive drinks, this is a huge budget killer. Opt to make your own instead! Fruity cocktails are my side dish of choice to bring to family holiday gatherings. Just getting in the holiday spirit. No pun intended.
If you are staying with family, be honest and let them know you'd rather not drop a small fortune eating out during the holidays.
I'm not saying that you should never eat out on vacation, but just remember it adds up REALLY fast.
Does anyone else suffer from buyers remorse the second they step out of a restaurant and realize they just dropped $60 for a meal for two people?!
KEEP TRACK OF YOUR SPENDING.
This is your biggest tool/defense against overspending while traveling!
