When you're ballin on a budget, you find out how to travel on a budget.
We are living in a travel-obsessed culture, and in particular, one generation seems to be the most obsessed- millennials.
Recent studies have shown that millennials are cultured... but broke. They prioritize travel over buying a house, paying off debt, and paying cash for major purchases.
Go to any millennial travel site and you'll find quotes like...
"Wanderlust. Adventure. Go where your heart takes you. Live in the moment. Money returns, time doesn't. "
Y'all, if you're taking a two week trip to Europe that will cost you five paychecks... you're money might not return.
There is a smart way to travel, and that is to travel on a budget!
If you have trouble sticking to your vacation budget, bring your cash envelopes along!
Having cash envelopes is one of the best defenses you have against overspending.
Be sure to check out the cute chic floral cash envelopes pictured above in my shop!
Many people prefer to travel with a credit card, and that is the easiest way to make sure that you overspend while traveling!
Cash hurts. Scientifically, swiping a credit card does not have the same affect on our brain that physically handing over cash does.
Use cash for your dining out and activities while on vacation!
Once the cash is out, you're done. That's it.
No more spending on that category!
One of my favorite ways to MAKE money while traveling is to use Ebates when I'm checking out online, because just by simply making a purchase I get cash back.
For you credit card lovers, this is a wonderful alternative to get cash back, and it's probably a higher percent back than your credit card!
If you're anything like me, you're sitting there thinking "ok, how many surveys do I have to take to earn that $25, because it's probably not worth my time. "
I am happy to report the answer is N-O-N-E.
I, like you, my friend, strongly dislike sites that require a bunch of extra surveys to take and other nonsense in order to get your cash back. Not worth it.
First, sign up for Ebates through my link and get a $10 credit to your account.
That's one (potentially two) free Starbucks drinks from my heart to yours, friend.
If you get nothing else out of this post, sign up for Ebates (takes less than 3 minutes) and get some free Starbucks... worth it.
Ebates offers cash back for over 2,500 stores, including:
I've found that almost every store I use to online shop Ebates has offered cash-back.
If you're looking for a quick way to save money, this is about as good as it gets!
Installing the Ebates browser add-on has been a game-changer for me.
Once you install the button (the "E" in the top right corner of the picture above), any store you visit that Ebates offers cash back for will prompt a red button to appear on your screen where you can activate the cash-back.
It's literally that simple.
The Ebates browser button will automatically scan the web for any coupons available for you to use on your purchase.
You can get extra savings on top of your cash back by using the Ebates browser button, plus you get the time back you would spend looking for coupons!
This mama needs all the time she can get, so if an app wants to find my coupons for me, by all means I will take it!
Sign up for Ebates and get your first $10 through my link!
Avoid going to your destination at the most popular time of year for that particular place, and you'll save hundreds on your plane tickets and lodging.
We visit my family in Washington multiple times a year, and for the past few years we've visited in May, even though the optimal time of year for good weather is July and August.
However, the plane tickets in May are nearly half the price as the tickets in July and August.
On average, we save $100-300 just by going during the least popular times of year.
Instead of paying over $100 to lay your head on a pillow every night, ditch the hotel and stay in a house using VRBO or AirBnB.
Instead of staying in a small hotel room with no view, you can stay in a home with a view and full kitchen for half the price!
This is a great option if you are going to a place that is very popular/expensive, as these homes will typically be cheaper.
It all depends on where you are going, but this is an option worth looking into, especially if you can split the cost between a few people!
We have used Groupon countless times, including on our honeymoon stay in Jackson, WY!
I was able to get us a suite in town at one of the most popular lodges in December for half the price simply by using Groupon !
I also snagged a Groupon for our fancier meals, which we try to choose one nice sit down restaurant per day of vacation.
I try as much as possible to plan ahead and use Groupon to get the best deal on nicer restaurants.
The other meals we eat as cheap as possible by either using groceries we bought to prepare a meal ourselves or going to a cheaper dining place.
On our honeymoon we saved $60/night on our hotel off of the price on the hotel website, so our total savings by using Groupon totaled $300!
Don't be a snob. Eat breakfast at the hotel. Unless you budgeted for it and don't care, then by all means ;)
I know the eggs aren't real and the sausage is rubbery, but snag a banana and a muffin and make a waffle. You'll survive.
We ALWAYS eat free breakfast at our hotel and save our one nicer meal for either lunch or dinner.
While I do love breakfast food, the penny pincher in me can't stand passing up a free breakfast included with our hotel stay. I just can't.
I just picture myself driving down the road throwing $20 bills out the window.
Let's shoot low and say the average breakfast for two costs $25.
If you are on a week long vacation, that amounts to $175 saved!
Use a trusted site that searches the internet for the best deals on flights, hotels, and car rentals.
Be careful- some sites stash their cookies on your computer and that is why one minute your flight will be $200 and five minutes later its $250!
I use Expedia.com or Booking.com to search for the best flight possible (and hotel if applicable).
If you're looking for an all-inclusive stay, Groupon is a good place to start as well, you can get a deal on a resort for $99!
Flights and hotels are often cheaper if you package them together through one site like the ones mentioned above!
Take advantage of your free carry on and two personal items.
Often, I'll bring a duffle bag as my carry on, my purse, and a large backpack. I do not check a bag if I'm traveling for under five days.
I often get a workout when I'm running across the airport with my jam-packed full carry-ons, but it's a cheap workout. You're welcome.
If you're anything like me, if you need four outfits for a trip, you pack about 63 just to be safe. I've given up this habit and you'll have to as well if you want to save some money!
If you don't check a bag, you save $25 each way, so $50 total!
I have never paid over $250 for a round trip flight. In fact, I consistently get flights to the destination I want for $200.
My secret is that I use multiple flight apps and google flight tracker to ensure I get the lowest price possible.
Here are some of the best sites that will do all the hard work for you!
I've had great luck with the sites listed above. I usually check them all before making any final reservations.
Eating out while on vacation adds up FAST, but there is a cheaper route to go!
Find a grocery store in the area you are staying and get items to make some meals while you are vacationing.
On our most recent trip we were attending a conference, so we went to the grocery store and got some bottled water to bring to the event since it cost $1 per bottle at the event!
On other trips, we have picked up some things to make PB&J's for lunch while we were out exploring.
The little things add up!
If you're not ballin on a budget, then you are missing out on your biggest tool for saving money on travel.
A budget tells your money where to go, instead of wondering where it all went. Once you start a budget, you can control the flow of your money.
Living on a budget has been the most eye-opening and life changing experience for our finances!
We were able to. pay off $20k of student loan debt in ONE year simply by creating a budget and sticking to it.

Snag a budget template here , and take it with you on your trip!
