Hey There, I’m Melanie! I am a former CPA turned personal finance blogger and mom of three. When you ‘Budget With Mel’, you’ll develop monthly budgets, cost-cutting tactics, and learn new behaviors and beliefs about money. It’s time you took the stress and confusion out of your personal finances.
Today, I'm going to show you exactly how you can save money using cash envelopes, including a step by step using my free cash envelope templates.
Cash envelopes are the perfect solution to overspending, simple but effective.
Cash envelopes work because your spending behavior with a card vs cash is vastly different.
Studies show that when we use a card instead of cash, we are willing to spend more. When using a card, consumers focus more on the benefit of a product rather than the cost.
Think about it.
If you go to buy your daily latte with a card that has a $500 spending limit, $5 seems like a very small amount.
On the other hand, if you have $20 of personal spending money left in your cash envelope and you go to buy that latte, suddenly it seems like a larger purchase.
Using cash WORKS.
I'm going to take you step by step through the cash envelope system and show you how save money using cash envelopes.
Using cash envelopes has been absolutely essential in our financial journey, and I know they will be in yours as well!

Cash envelopes are great for budget categories that you find yourself consistently going over, or for any categories you'd like to trim down.
When I don't use cash for certain categories, I always end up having that "oh crap" moment.
That moment occurs when I update our budget for what we've spent to see how much I have left, and realize the number I had "in my head" of our total purchases as opposed to what was actually purchased are two very different things.
A good example of a category that I MUST use a cash envelope for is groceries.
I lose track of my grocery spending very quickly.
Here are some common cash envelope categories:
The possibilities are endless! You can use your envelopes for whatever you'd like!
Cash is a great defense against overspending, but your most powerful tool is a monthly budget.
If you don't yet have a written monthly budget, it's time to create one!
To get started, you can purchase my ultimate budget bundle which has every personal financial planning resource you could need!
The budget bundle is simple, easy to follow, and will help you instantly take control of your money.
The picture below shows some of the budget templates included (there's much more)!
Once you have your budget set, take that amount of cash out of your bank account and get ready to fill your envelopes.
My free cash envelope templates include a place for you to track your spending!
Now it's time to make your envelopes!
If you haven't already, instantly download my free template by subscribing.
Once you have completed the download, you should have twenty pages of envelope templates and pre-made templates ready to use.
You can choose from either a vertical envelope or a horizontal envelope.
In the first few pages of the download, you will find blank templates for you to use, like the picture above.
The other pages are pre-made templates that are already labeled.
Print and cut out the template you want to use on the solid lines.
To ensure your envelopes are sturdy, I would suggest using cardstock paper instead of plain paper.
To cut out, I like to use a paper cutter to cut the straight edges, it ensures you have a clean cut every time!
On the areas labeled glue, either use tape or glue (I personally prefer to use glue dots) to fold and glue the envelopes together.
Especially if you are not going to laminate the envelopes, use a generous amount of glue so the envelopes hold together well.
Fold the areas labeled glue over, add glue or tape, and then fold final piece over (labeled "FOLD OVER").
It can be easy to lose track of your cash spending, so I have included a place to track your spending!
If you laminate your envelopes, you can use a sharpie to write in the area and it will come right off if you wipe it with rubbing alcohol.
If you're interested in some prettier envelopes, I've created a watercolor floral design set of envelopes available in both the horizontal and vertical style envelope.
If you LIKE and ENJOY carrying around your envelopes, you are more likely to use them.
When I used plain envelopes, I would leave them behind half the time and just take my cash along because I hated pulling them out at the store.
Treat yourself to some pretty envelopes!
Remember, cash is KING.
You might think you have your spending under control with a card, but until you use cash you'll never understand the difference in spending habits with a card vs. cash.
I ALWAYS have money left over in my cash envelopes because it's a lot harder to hand over a $100 bill than it is to swipe my card (debit OR credit).
Give it a try and see for yourself!
