It's no secret that in order to pay off debt you have to work hard and stay motivated. One of the best ways to stay motivated on your debt free journey is to hear from others who have walked the journey!
Because of this, I'm doing a debt free stories series on my blog, where you get to hear from others who have broken the chains of debt! They detail how they did it, how they stayed motivated, and what the keys to success are!
You don't want to miss out on this series :)
Next up in the debt free series is Brad and his wife Angelica!

I had transitioned from a lucrative corporate sales job to being a contract musician. I was utterly unprepared for the "lumpiness" that goes along with being a contractor and I struggled for the first 3 years.
As a result, I took out a HELOC (home equity line of credit) to use as my emergency fund. Then one day I looked up and I had used all of the $43,000 of line credit and my financial situation had not gotten any better.
I was in the middle of a downward spiral financially and emotionally speaking when I discovered Dave Ramsey's material. It was a game changer for me.
I was literally so sick and tired of being sick and tired. My "why" was to escape the train wreck I had created for myself and never look back. I had reached the point that I was willing to do whatever it took.
I devoured all of Dave Ramsey's content and did exactly what I now teach my students to do:
1) I organized my finances
2) got on a written budget
3) eliminated all of my debt and,
4) am now over 50% of the way to FI.

I kept going back to my "why" and I was maniacally attached to my budget and expense tracking. I (temporarily) went back into corporate sales and kept my music career as a side hustle. With those two generators in place and some fastidious budgeting and expense tracking, I was able to obliterate all $43,000 of that debt in 2.5 years!
If you want to get your finances in order, start with one of these budget templates .
I literally had to change my mind . Fortunately, I was broken enough that I was totally open to challenging all of my beliefs about money and what had gotten me to the low point that I was.
My biggest obstacle was getting started and learning the skills I needed to move forward in the process. As mentioned before, I was DONE with being in debt and was not at all tempted back into the mindless behaviors that had gotten me into trouble in the first place.
That it's possible and it's not as hard as people may think. The hardest thing is making the decision to do it. I mean REALLY deciding you're going to do it. You have to "burn the ships" and not allow yourself to EVER go back. It's SO worth it on the other side and I want that for all my students!
If you're thinking about getting out of debt, examine your motives. I know this may sound odd, so let me explain.
First, you must be able to clearly define your "why". Why? Because the process will be difficult and demanding and you WILL be tempted to quit. Your "why" will be pivotal in those moments.
Even more, you have to really be willing to examine your beliefs about money, personal finance, wealth and just economics in general. Once you enter into the debt-elimination process, the very disciplines required to achieve debt-freedom will challenge those beliefs.
So just go ahead and decide you're going to start thinking about those beliefs and challenging them.
I just want to reiterate how awesome it is to be on the other side of debt servitude . Most importantly, whatever it costs you, whatever the sacrifice, I promise you it's worth it!
