Hey There, I’m Melanie! I am a former CPA turned personal finance blogger and mom of three. When you ‘Budget With Mel’, you’ll develop monthly budgets, cost-cutting tactics, and learn new behaviors and beliefs about money. It’s time you took the stress and confusion out of your personal finances.
Before you tell me I'm nuts, listen to my reasons you need to start a blog yesterday.
I'll be honest, if I told myself to just stop being scared and start a blog the first time I thought about starting a blog, I would've been blogging for quite some time now.
Starting a blog has been a huge blessing in my life.
I know there are some of you who have thought about it for so long but can't quite muster up the courage or time commitment to do so.
Maybe you think no one would read your blog. You don't want to put in all this time for no return. Everyone already blogs about what you're passionate about.
Let me tell you, almost everyone spends their free time on the internet.
That means there is a world of opportunity for those who are interested in blogging, and like me, you'll wish you started yesterday.
You have a unique voice that is waiting to be heard and to help others!
I know you've probably heard this a million times... "blog because it's an awesome creative outlet!"
Yes, that's true, but not a lot of people want to spend over ten hours a week on a "creative outlet."
The idea is to start blogging about something you love and putting more hours into it than you would a hobby because you have an end goal in mind.
Blogs don't make money, businesses do.
Many people start their blog as a creative outlet without any real time investment besides a couple hours here and there.
Think of it as getting to do something you absolutely love whilst being creative.
I know you have something valuable to say, you just don't have the confidence to say it, and/or you aren't willing to learn how to blog because you're not tech-savvy.
Get out of your dang comfort zone!
Yes, it's hard to do, but just remember every great blogger started from the same place of fear and self-doubt. They just chose to overcome it.
If you haven't every done anything that's challenged you to get out of your comfort zone (I hadn't up until I started my blog), then seriously consider what's holding you back.
Getting out of my comfort zone is one of the best decisions I've made!
You don't need to invest thousands of dollars to get started blogging. In fact, all you need is hosting and a Wordpress site !
What's great about blogging is that the drivers behind a lot of your traffic (Pinterest, Instagram, google search, etc) are free ... my favorite word!
To be honest, when you first start you don't need to spend hardly any money to get a good amount of traffic.
A few of the most effective ways to make money right away as a beginner blogger include:
You don't have to invest a ton of money right away to start making money, try one of the ideas listed above (I'd highly recommend affiliate marketing when you first start out).
You can start a blog through my link for less than the cost of a latte a day. Seriously. You have nothing to lose, and I know that you'll do great! :)
⭐️ Read this tutorial for how to sign up with Bluehost and connect it to Wordpress (your blogging platform that you get free with a Bluehost purchase).
Everyone has knowledge that they can use to help others, I truly believe that. Don't buy into the lie that no one will read your blog because you don't have anything new/valuable to say.
Blogging is beyond fun because you get to be a part of a community that helps, challenges, encourages, and comes along side each other in such a unique way.
You'll find that not only are you serving others, but they are serving you in ways you could never imagine!
I learn just as much from my followers/readers as they (hopefully) do from me.
The best feeling in the world is when you have a reader or follower message you and tell you that you are a huge inspiration to them and you have helped them change their life.
BEST. FEELING. IN. THE. WORLD.
When you humble yourself to serve others, you'll be blessed in countless ways.
It doesn't matter how specific or small you think your niche is, you can make money blogging about it.
There are bloggers who earn a full-time income blogging from home in almost every area/niche you can think of, including:
These are just a few, the possibilities are literally endless.

Remember, you can make money with a small blog and a topic that you are passionate about!
On the other hand, maybe you think that there are already too many people who blog about what you're passionate about.
That's how I felt when I first started my blog!
I never thought I would be getting over 20,000 visitors to my site every single month, but here I am!
Don't be discouraged if it feels like you're literally crawling when you first start. Don't compare your introduction to someones middle.
Now that I've convinced you to do something absolutely crazy, it's time to get started.
Here are the first few things you need to do!
The first thing you need to do is get hosting, and I recommend using Bluehost hosting on the Wordpress dashboard.
When you sign up with Bluehost through my link, you get a free domain name (the URL of your website) AND Wordpress for free.
This is great because you save money right off the bat!
If you aren't sure of what you want your domain name to be, I'd still recommend signing up, and just choose the option to register your domain later.
This way, you are forcing yourself to GET STARTED... which you should've done yesterday ;)
Have 10-15 posts ready to publish before you take your site live. When you buy your hosting, your site will be in "demo mode" until you make it live.
One thing I wish I would have done when I first started blogging was have more posts ready to go.
It's already super time consuming to get your feet off the ground and on top of it all to worry about creating content.
If you have your posts ready to go, you can focus on the fun stuff, like choosing a pretty theme and working on your Pinterest marketing.
A free theme is fine at first, but eventually you'll want to upgrade to a paid theme that has most of the fancy coding done for you.
The key benefit of using a paid theme is that a paid theme offers more customization, freedom, and support.
I used a free theme at first, and now I use a fully customizable, easy to use theme called Divi. It's more of a drag and drop block theme builder, where you have the capability to customize almost every single area of your blog!
Pinterest is your bread and butter, blogging friend , and Tailwind is a remarkable investment.
Instagram is becoming an increasingly great way to increase traffic, but for most bloggers Pinterest is where it's at.
I could/need to write a whole post on what to do and what NOT to do on Pinterest, but I'll sum up everything in one line.
Make beautiful, atheistically pleasing pins and use a software (I'd recommend Tailwind ) to pin for you all dang day long.
I use Canva to create my pins, and I learned how to design phenomenal pins that go viral from Applecart Lane. Literally read any of her blog posts and you'll learn everything you need to know to create beautiful pins!
If you only take one thing from this post, let it be that you need to start today.
To be honest, if you aren't motivated enough today, you won't be motivated enough tomorrow. Or Monday. Or next month.
Get your blog set up today and figure out the details later. Start writing posts. Thinking about branding. A logo.
If you are sincere and passionate about what you want to say, blogging will truly be one of the most rewarding parts of your life.
